Coenzyme Q10:
Coenzyme Q10 is the valuable, naturally occurring super antioxidant (and bioenergetic) that works as a vitamin-like substance in every cell through biochemical reactions to produce energy. It repairs skin and prevents damage to collagen, a protein that supports the skin and thickens it. Scientists now believe that Coenzyme Q10 is essential for generating 95% of the total energy required by the human body. Starting at about age 30, levels of Coenzyme Q10 drop, perhaps because of aging.
After years of being used as a nutritional supplement, Coenzyme Q10 has only recently made its debut on the skin care market. Coenzyme Q10 slows down tissue damage by decreasing the effect of free radical molecules. In a placebo-controlled study, researchers discovered that after six weeks of daily treatment on crow’s feet (eye wrinkles), wrinkle depth was reduced by 27%; after 10 weeks, fine lines and wrinkles were reduced by a surprising 43%. Alpha Lipoic Acid (“The Master Antioxidant”)
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), discovered by researchers in 1951, is a naturally occurring molecule that exists deep inside every cell in our bodies. ALA acts as a non-vitamin coenzyme in energy production in cellular metabolism and functions as the “Master Antioxidant” because it acts to regenerate, and thus prolong the activity of, other antioxidant molecules including Coenzyme Q10, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Once in the body’s tissues, ALA can be converted to Dihydrolipoic Acid (DHLA), an equally potent free radical scavenger. ALA is unique among biological antioxidants because it is soluble in both water and lipids (fat). Unlike Vitamin E, it can fight free radicals in any part of a cell and even enter into the space between cells.
The result of ALA usage is to prevent free radical damage, protect our genetic material, and slow the aging process.
DMAE
DMAE is known chemically as Dimethyl-Amino-Ethanol. Dmae has been known in Europe by the product name Deanol for more than three decades, and is often referred to as an instant anti-aging face-lift. DMAE naturally occurs in fish and is a potent natural amino antioxidant; an anti inflammatory; and an anti-aging nutrient. DMAE has been popular for many years when taken internally to improve mental alertness and clarity of thinking. Unlike other antioxidants, DMAE is an antioxidant membrane stabilizer, which results in a dramatic firming effect on skin. When this unusual nutrient complex is applied topically, not only does it work quickly – within minutes of application, but it also continues to firm the skin over time. Vitamin E
Vitamin E, considered to be one of the stronger antioxidants, prevents cell damage by inhibiting the oxidation of lipids and the formation of free radicals. Topical Vitamin E has been shown to have a wide variety of skin benefits, including a reduction of the appearance of marks on the skin.
In one study of women between 42 and 64 years of age, over one-half of the subjects showed a significant reduction in wrinkling and roughness associated with photoaging on the eyelid treated daily with a Vitamin E containing cream for four weeks compared to the eyelid treated with placebo cream. The researchers noted that their results clearly showed that topical use of Vitamin E induced smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles in a sensitive area of the face. Collagen Protector
Collagen is the main protein of connective tissue (responsible for the skin’s structure), and its degradation due to aging and/or sun damage leads to wrinkles.
