Aging skin is characterized by thinning and wrinkling of the epidermis together with the appearance of lines, crevices and furrows. Our cells use oxygen to produce energy. In the process, they generate free radicals – unstable oxygen molecules created during such basic metabolic functions as circulation and digestion. Free radicals are also produced by sunlight, by toxins such as pesticides, and by cigarette smoke and air pollution. In your body, free radicals literally bounce about, attaching themselves to other atoms and molecules, whether they’re wanted or not.
Free radicals are the central players in tissue degeneration and the aging process. It’s the same process that causes metal to rust. This anti-aging damage is typically inflicted (what has been done to the skin) as opposed to afflicted (inherited and genetic).
Antioxidants prevent free-radical damage simply by giving these wildly out-of-control molecules the electron partners they seek. Once the antioxidant joins with the free radical, the free radical no longer attempts to latch on to the various components of other cells. In this way, antioxidants spare important molecules from oxidative damage. Antioxidants make the free radicals harmless.
